Endlers Livebearers: Keeping Only One Sex

Endlers are very active and fun fish to watch in a community tank or as a single species tank.

Many fish keepers don’t want to go through the expense or trouble of breeding Endlers, they just want keep them in their tanks for their beauty and entertainment value.

People who keep guppies and only want one sex will sometimes purchase only females as they a seem to be hardier and less aggressive than the males.

This is not the case when it comes to Endlers.  The male Endlers seem to be quite a bit hardier than the females and both males and females are get along fine when they are in a same sex environment.

Males will sometimes chase another male around in the tank but it rarely goes much further than that.

If you only have males then they will display and dance for each other nearly as aggressively as if you had some females in the tank.

Ordering all males is less expensive than ordering females, trios or pairs so it’s a great way to fill your tank with beautiful, active fish at a relatively low cost.

  2. Is it safe to put 4 male endler livebearers with 1 male betta fish in a 10 gallon tank? Will the endlers nip at the betta? Will the betta try to get the endlers? Just want to keep the peace. Thanks!

    1. Although you may have success keeping the two types of fish together, I wouldn’t recommend mixing Endlers with a Betta.

While it is unlikely that the Betta would be able to catch a healthy Endler, it is likely that the Endlers would nip at the Bettas fins.
